How to Use Plastochem UPVC Solvent Cement – Step-by-Step Guide

Plastochem’s UPVC Solvent Cement is a specialized adhesive designed to create strong, leak-proof joints in UPVC piping systems. Whether you’re in plumbing, construction, or industrial piping, following the correct process is key to achieving durable results.

U-PVC Solvent Cement

 What is UPVC Solvent Cement?

UPVC (Unplasticized Polyvinyl Chloride) Solvent Cement is a chemical adhesive that:

  • Softens the surface of pipes and fittings.
  • Dissolves the resin for molecular bonding.
  • Forms a permanent chemical weld, often stronger than the pipe itself.

How It Works – The Bonding Process

  1. Surface Softening
Solvent penetrates pipe and fitting surfaces to soften them.
  2. Resin Dissolution
The UPVC resin in the cement starts to dissolve into the softened areas.
  3. Molecular Fusion
When joined with slight pressure, the polymer chains entangle to form a strong bond.
  4. Curing
As solvent evaporates, the fused materials harden into a robust joint.

Step-by-Step: How to Use Plastochem Solvent Cement

Step 1: Prepare the Pipe and Fitting

  • Clean the surfaceswith a dry cloth to remove dust, grease, and moisture.
  • Use fine sandpaperor a cloth to lightly roughen the joining surfaces if needed.

 Step 2: Apply the Cement

  • Open the Plastochem cement and stir well.
  • Use an applicator brush to apply a thin, even layerinside the fitting and outside the pipe.
  • For larger pipes or heavy-bodied cement, apply generouslyto ensure proper gap-filling.

 Step 3: Join the Pieces

  • Push the pipe into the fittingwith a twisting motion to evenly spread the cement.
  • Hold the joint firmly for 30 seconds to 1 minuteto ensure initial bonding.

 Step 4: Curing Time

  • Let the joint set undisturbed for at least 10–15 minutes.
  • Allow full curing for:
    • 2 hoursfor pressure testing
    • 10 hoursfor full bond strength

 Main Ingredients & Their Roles

  1. Solvents

Help dissolve UPVC and prep the surface:

  • THF, MEK, Cyclohexanone, Acetone
  1. UPVC Resin
  • Forms the bonding layerduring curing.
  • Enhances chemical resistance.
  1. Fillers
  • Improve viscosity and gap-filling
  • Add strength to imperfect joints.
